It had been Roxy's executive decision to go to LOTAK. She had also been the first to suggest that it was the krypton on Dirk's planet that had caused the initial problem. She went on for a spell about noble gases and that krypton is highly harmful and xenon, the gas on Jake's planet, was commonly used as a treatment for brain damage victims that were, in some cases, affected by krypton. She seemed very proud of her sober ability to browse wikipedia and dig through countless links and boring information on the topic to help Jake out. He was much obliged, even if most of what she said went right over his head.
He had been doing pretty well for a while. They'd all been on LOTAK for two days before anything negative happened. He had been sporting a mild headache since about three hours after arriving on the planet at all, but that was just a basic side effect of being on the planet. He'd mentioned it, and they'd all decided it was best for him to take it easy. So when a swarm of the skeletal imps showed up, they set Jake up in one of the open buildings where nothing could get to him and run off to draw them away.
And he'd been an idiot to take off his mask, but the thing was digging into his skin and he'd gotten a bit of dust in it somehow and it kept making him sneeze. It was actually sort of gross to sneeze all over the inside of something that was constantly pressed to your face. So he'd taken it off with intent to clean it, and in doing so he'd gone very abruptly from minor headache to debilitating migraine, and he hadn't even had the chance to get his mask back on.
So he was crumpled, the mask pressed awkwardly toward his face but not entirely covering him, unconscious in the building they'd all left him in.
