He laid there for a long time, facing the wall, just listening. He couldn't decide what he thought of Jake staying. Maybe it was a shred of hope for them being friends again. Maybe it was nothing at all. Maybe the guy was just tired and didn't feel like going to converse with an irritable alien over changing sleeping arrangements. Maybe he'd talk to Karkat tomorrow, and switch out anyway. After everything, he couldn't imagine he'd actually want to stay.

He rolled over when Jake's breathing evened out, instead looking across the room to watch him sleep. His back was turned to him, but Dirk noticed he'd gotten a little thinner. He figured the stress of Jane turning up possessed and kidnapping him hadn't been kind to him. He'd been worried, despite himself, because even if he'd been impossibly angry with Jake for his constant avoidance and everything else, he'd still lost himself a best friend in all this. He didn't know if he still loved Jake or not, but there was a definite ache from losing him entirely.

He rolled back over again and hunkered into the only somewhat comfortable mattress, pulling the sheets up to his chin. He slept fitfully, but sleep was sleep.
