Something in the resigned sadness of Jake's sobbed laughter made Dirk's shoulder sag, and he just held the wad of paper towels to the stump of Jake's arm. Blood was slowly soaking through it. He frowned. Something occurred to him, and he stood, abruptly.
"...Stay there. Don't fall asleep, whatever you do. I will be right back."
He brisked past the couch and tried the door into the inner office. It was locked from the other side. He frowned, and busted out the glass with his elbow, reaching through to unlock it. He disappeared down the narrow hallway and-- ahah! They were in luck. It was a doctor's office. He looted the medical supplies and came back with his arms full of bandaging and cleaning supplies. He went back a second time, this time returning with a small stack of towels and a shallow basin of warm water.
"We should stay here a while-- they still have running water, and that's absolutely invaluable to your healing."
