Dirk swallowed against a sudden lump in his throat at the glassy look in Jake's eyes, but shushed him gently again.

"You'll be fine, just stay with me," he said, taking one of the towels and dipping it in the warm water. He slowly started to clean the stump where Jake's arm had been, careful not to disrupt where the blood had started to clot in an attempt to prevent him from bleeding out. He tied a strip of bandaging above the stump to staunch the bleeding again, glancing up at Jake's face every few seconds while he worked to clean the wound.
