"Jake, come on, stay with me," he said, his voice tinged with a mild hysteria. He could fix this, he could make this better. He just had to keep him awake. "You can sleep once I know you're stable. Then you can sleep all of this off and I'll keep watch. Just stay with me until I say it's okay. Can you do that for me?" Please, Jake.
Once he was done cleaning the wound, he froze for a long handful of seconds. With the arm just cleanly cut as it was, he wasn't going to be able to attach any sort of prosthesis to it. He was going to have to rearrange the tissue to allow for it. He glanced up at Jake. Not now. Jake was in enough shock. He put a thick pad of gauze under the base of the stump, for support, and then slowly bandaged up most of the remaining arm. He wrapped the bandages up over Jake's shoulder and looped them a few times around the side of his neck, so they would be secure. The whole time, he watched Jake, and periodically touched his face once his hands were clean, muttering to him about how it was almost over, he was being so good.
