Jake hadn't seen him get upset, earlier, because he'd been in the process of losing consciousness and, well, unconscious. So Dirk reigned himself in, swallowing the bitter flavor of self-loathing over having caused Jake this much trouble. He failed at keeping the emotion entirely out of his eyes, but stood and did as he was asked.
