Dirk's words were simple enough, but they brought Jake back to the reality of the situation, clawing and shouting that he didn't want to. His heart rose back into his throat, and he thought for a moment that he tasted bile on the back of his tongue. He swallowed, shut his eyes, and nodded.
He was falling for a complete stranger.
"Sorry, mate," he offered thinly, masking his unease in his panting to regain his breath. "We'll get you fixed up in a jif."
