This is a generic Jakepost to reply to. Because the meme post was all Jake and has some inconceivable amount of comments now so it doesn't like to load. Have at, my lovelies.
His body was preemptively trying to force him down and make him rest so he didn't fall prey to illness, but he wasn't really listening. He latched onto Dirk and buried his face in him, humming quietly.
He didn't really sleep much. Not restfully at least. His brain refused to shut down, thinking and spinning and twisting itself in knots about nothing in particular. When his alarm went off at 7am he was shaking slightly, from cold or exhaustion or both. He sat up and fiddled with his phone for a while, trying to keep the faint wheeze to his breath quiet enough to not be telling to Dirk.
Good. Jake smiled and crouched over him to press his lips to Dirk's forehead before he climbed out of bed, rustling around in the semi-darkness of the drawn curtains to gather some clean clothes and take a shower. It was far more telling when he found himself needing to sit in the shower than his simple tiredness had been, but he powered on, convincing himself he was just sleep deprived.
It wasn't until he was on the lower level of the house seeking his car keys that he really had to stop, because Bec had whuffed at something on the back porch and startled him and he'd wound up sitting on the floor without meaning to at all when he turned too quickly to figure out what the animal was on about. Luckily or unluckily or both, Jade wandered up from her lab while he was still on the floor and she tutted at him.
"Picking up what your boyfriend is getting rid of?" Her tone was gentle, but still scolding. Jake tried to not look chastised.
"He's not my boyfriend," he offered meekly.
"Same difference. Go back upstairs, I'll bring you both some coffee and if you're feeling better in an hour I'll let you go to your second class." Jake whined, but cooperated, trudging back upstairs and sitting in his computer chair sort of uncoordinatedly, folding over the desk and trying to remember when he'd run out of breath.
"Mmmn," Jake shook his head slowly. "I could have slept on the couch if I was worried about it. To be honest I haven't felt right since before you came down with a fever."
"I felt well enough to go, I wasn't falling into dead sleeps on my laptop, thank you," he returned, carefully getting back to his feet. He was still shaking. He made his way over to the bed and wormed his way out of his boots to crawl up alongside Dirk, leeching warmth.
He shoved his glasses up off of his face and buried it in Dirk's side, willing his shaking to cease. It took until Jade wandered into the room with two mugs of coffee for it to have actually abated enough for him to not feel like he was rattling apart.
"Hey," Jade greeted. "Coffee's up, it'll help you stay warm."
He sat up carefully, still clung pretty close to Dirk to maintain warmth, and looked up to offer something of a slight smile to his grandmother. She just raised her eyebrows and tsked softly.
"Neither of you are going anywhere today," she said gently, setting herself on the edge of Jake's bed and offering them each a mug of caffeine. She was careful to slip the handle around Jake's fingers so he didn't drop it into his or Dirk's laps. Jake set his head on Dirk's shoulder and huddled closer to the coffee, not drinking it yet. "I brought some sugar and cream for yours, Dirk, I didn't want to try fixing it and get it wrong." She extracted a handful of sugar packets and single-serve cups of flavored coffee creamer from a pocket of her lab coat.
He receded slightly and propped himself up against the wall, instead-- it would have been hard to wiggle around to cuddle up to Jade with coffee in his hands. She reached across and brushed his hair away from his face, tsking again.
"You're welcome. How are you feeling? Since it's reasonably obvious how dingus here is." Jake grumbled quietly but set to slowly sipping at his coffee.
"Good. Take it easy for today and you should be right as rain. I know you weren't exactly expecting to stay the weekend, so if you need anything or to get home I can take you tomorrow."
Jake was sort of wilting into his coffee. Oh, it was warm. He liked warm.
"It's no trouble at all. If you're here to watch him I can finish up what I'm working on in the lab in time to get you to work and keep an eye on him while you're gone. What are your usual hours?"
Jake hunkered back against Dirk, still with his coffee, and felt marginally less awful as the warmth and caffeine spread through his system. His shaking would be worse by the time he was done with the mug, for caffeine versus sustenance, but he'd be warmer and sated.
"Consider your time with Jake payment," Jade corrected, reaching out and patting Dirk gently on the head. She didn't want to mess up his 'do. Standing, then, she moved away from the bed and watched them both for a moment. "I'll be downstairs if either of you need anything."
"Sorry, gram," Jake rasped idly, and Jade just tsked again.
"Don't be sorry, just rest and feel better. Come get some soup when you're up for it."
Jake grumbled again, and Jade waved off Dirk's thanks with a smile before she left the room again. The warmth of the coffee was lifting Jake's mood a little but he was still quiet and listless.
