She let him take in the view of the lab-- it was relatively generic, with some quirky machinery that seemed abnormal here and there, and a lot of plants. Idly, she shut the door behind her.

"Now, before we get too far along in this tour, I have to ask."

She inspected her fingernails absently, the soles of her flats making soft tapping sounds as she guided him down a sort of aisle in the lab.

"What are your intentions with my grandson? Just, overall."

Jade most certainly has to appreciate the honesty. She nodded, making a funny sort of approving-frowning face as she does so. She paused and chatted about a particular piece of machinery for a moment, and then turned to look at Dirk with a relatively somber expression.

"Just... be careful with him." She smiled a little. "He gets in over his head, and I'm not going to blame you if he winds up getting himself hurt because he falls for you, but..." She shook her head. "Well for one thing, look at you." She gestured blindly. "He doesn't get a lot of positive attention, because he's sort of... My grandson." She rubbed at the side of her face. "He's weird in just about every way possible. I'm both impressed and not at all surprised that he's got enough spunk in bed to keep someone that knows what they're doing interested."

Jade laughed outright at that.

"I was as surprised as you are," she said, shaking her head again. "He was all befuddled when he came to tell me, all, Gram I think I've done something stupid, but it's a lot of fun?? and I was thinking he'd gotten into drugs or something. I suppose the two aren't mutually exclusive by some people's standards."

She sighed a little.

"But, no, you're definitely the first of your kind he's brought home. In more ways than one, actually, he's only ever brought a girl home once, in high school. And then her weeaboo cousin or older sister or some kind of legal guardian took her back to Japan with her and he hasn't brought anybody home since."

"Be safe, too," she instructed, pointing a finger toward him. "For both of you. And if you need any help don't hesitate to ask. I know he's feeding you and all, but otherwise I don't mind helping. Jake's enjoyment of you aside you're a good kid."

Her smile got wry again.

"I try, at least," she offered, and then went about the tour. She showed him most everything in the lab-- things she was working on, machinery, the works. She took off her headset after a while and offered it to Dirk, after a brief consideration of trying to put it on his head herself.

"The stem at the front has to be against your forehead, and the clip has to be on your ear."

"Calibrating," she corrected. "They're reading your brain waves. Give them a moment."

She smiled. "See, there you go. They're usually pretty still, they'll swivel around a bit, but they don't have many settings as of yet."

"Yeah, that's the battery pack. I'm afraid if I try to counterbalance it it'll be too heavy and they'll cause headaches." She tutted a little and smoothed the fur on the right ear, despite it being on Dirk's head.

"They eat batteries really fast, too, or I'd just lessen the battery count. Having four is really the only way for them to last longer than thirty minutes if left on."

"Too many steps, I think. Plus it'd just make them bulkier. I considered putting the batteries in the ears themselves, but then they wouldn't be interchangeable."

"You can swap out the ears," she explained. "The default is white, but they also come in brown, black, leopard, devil horns, and I think there's a floppy-eared dog variant." She frowned. "I think we're working out the kinks on rabbit ears, since they'd have to be taller."

"I'm glad you like them," she said. Mental note for things to give Dirk in the future; a pair of Necomimi. It's so anime. "Was there anything else in particular you wanted me to show you, or should I leave you to go attend to my grandson?"
